Tinyan Chan was born into a family of artists in Hin Kwong Village, Go Yew County, Kwangtung, China. Chan was the youngest in his family, and was instructed by his older brother, a well-known portrait painter in Hong Kong. By the age of sixteen had been admitted to the Mid-Southern China Academy of Fine Arts, and three years later continued his studies at the Canton Academy of Fine Arts. Chan moved to Hong Kong in the early 1960’s, established the Hong Kong Artists Club and exhibited at the renowned Konn Gallery. In 1965 Chan was appointed Chief Designer of the United Nigerian Textile Company, and spent the next two years in West Africa. After leaving Nigeria, Chan traveled through Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, France and Italy, before attending the Ecole National Superieure de Beaux-Art in Paris for one year. In 1968 he immigrated to Canada solidifying his career as a full-time professional artist. He is one of Canada’s most renowned artists, and was the youngest member elected to the prestigious circle of the Senior Members of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), of which there have only been 67 living and deceased Senior Members elected. Tinyan Chan’s art can be found in numerous international public and private collections, including several royal collections.
